Washington, DC, United States (4E) - Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora will skip the team's trip to the White House Thursday, citing concerns over Puerto Rico's continuing struggles to rebuild from Hurricane Maria.

The hurricane tore through Dominica, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in September 2017, and is considered the worst natural disaster on record there.

"Even though the United States Government has helped, there's still a long road ahead and that is OUR reality. I've used my voice on many occasions so that Puerto Ricans are not forgotten and my absence (from the White House) is no different," Cora said in the statement.

The Red Sox won their third recent World Series title in 2018, toppling the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 in the best-of-seven showdown.
